Most 'check on your elderly parents' advice assumes they have a smartphone and use it comfortably. For a huge number of families, that's simply not true — Mummy has a basic feature phone, or a smartphone she only uses to receive calls. The good news: you don't need a smartphone to have a reliable daily check-in. Here are approaches that work on any phone.
The missed-call check-in
Missed-call culture is second nature in India — everyone has given a missed call to say 'call me back' or 'I've reached.' You can turn that same habit into a daily signal: your parent gives a missed call to a set number each morning to say 'I'm fine.' It costs them nothing, requires no reading or typing, and uses a behaviour they already know. Simple and reliable.
The automated daily voice call (IVR)
A scheduled automated call, in your parent's own language, is one of the most accessible options of all. The call asks a simple question — 'Are you okay? Press 1 if you're fine' — and your parent presses one button. It works on the most basic ₹1,000 phone, needs no literacy with apps, and if there's no answer, the system can retry and then alert you. For parents who are uneasy with anything digital, pressing a single button on a normal call is about as easy as it gets.
A standing agreement with a neighbour
Low-tech doesn't only mean phones. Arrange for a trusted neighbour to exchange a wave or a word with your parent each day, and to message you if they don't see them. Community check-ins have kept elders safe for generations; they pair beautifully with a phone-based signal as a backup.
WhatsApp — only if they truly use it
Many older parents do have WhatsApp, even if only for forwards and family photos. If yours genuinely opens it daily, a single 'I'm okay' button in a daily message can work well. But be honest about whether they'll actually use it — if WhatsApp sits unopened for days, fall back to a missed call or voice call instead.
What makes any of these stick
- Same signal, same time every day — routine beats novelty.
- One action, not several — the fewer steps, the more reliable.
- A grace window before you worry — so a temple visit isn't an emergency.
- Framed as reassurance for you, never as being watched.
Putting it together without the daily effort
You can run all of this by hand, but it gets tiring to call at the same time daily, track who checked in, and coordinate with siblings. ParentPulse automates exactly the low-tech methods above — a daily missed-call, automated voice call, or WhatsApp check-in for your parent (no smartphone needed), with a simple 'okay' shown to you each day and an instant alert only if a check-in is missed. Whatever method you choose, the principle holds: the best check-in is the one your parent will actually do, every day, without a second thought.
A little reassurance, every day
Know they’re okay—without another reminder on your list.
ParentPulse makes a daily check-in as easy as answering a call, giving a missed call, or tapping one WhatsApp button.
